CAMP STAFF

Tony Vittorio - Head Baseball Coach, University of Dayton

Since taking over as head coach in 2000, Tony Vittorio has raised the standards for Dayton baseball. In his tenure at UD, Vittorio has led the Flyers to eight 30-plus-win seasons and its six appearances in the Atlantic 10 Tournament including a record breaking season in 2009 when the Flyers captured their first-ever Atlantic 10 regular season baseball championship. Dayton won the Atlantic 10 Tournament title in 2012 for its second conference championship.

Vittorio has helped coach eight Major League Baseball draft picks since 2002, including Jerry Blevins who made his major league debut with the Oakland A's in 2007, and Craig Stammen, who earned his first start with the Washington Nationals in 2009.

In 2009, Vittorio led the Flyers to a program record 38 wins. He also eclipsed the 500 career win mark in a 5-3 win against Fordham. Vittorio has led Dayton to consecutive 32-win seasons in 2001 and 2002 as UD made its first-ever berths in the A-10 Tournament. In 2005, the Flyers took two of three games against #19 Notre Dame en route to a then-school-record 36 win campaign, which concluded with a berth to the A-10 Tournament at Fifth Third Field.

A native of Indianapolis, Vittorio graduated from Hanover (IN) College in 1988 with a double major in both business administration and physical education. He went on to earn his master’s degree in sports management from the University of Kentucky in 1997. At Hanover, Vittorio was a four-year letterwinner as a middle infielder and was selected to the American College Hall of Fame at the conclusion of his collegiate career.

Vittorio resides in Kettering with his wife, Heather, daughter, Taylor, and son, Nic.

Matt Talarico - Assistant Baseball Coach, University of Dayton

Matt Talarico is in his third season as an assistant coach with Dayton baseball. His responsibilities include overseeing hitting and offensive production, as well as baserunning.

In his first two seasons with the Flyers, Talarico made a significant mark by implementing an aggressive base running system which obliterated the Dayton record books and became nationally distinguished. In 2011, Dayton’s 121 stolen bases was the first time in program history that UD recorded over 100 steals in season. All-American Brian Blasik tied a school record for steals in a season (23) while C.J. Gillman was just one behind with 22. As a team, UD ranked seventh in the nation in total stolen bases (121) and seventh in stolen bases per game (2.05). The Flyers were just as productive in 2012, leading the nation once again in stolen bases with 164.

Talarico, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., spent one year as Toledo’s volunteer assistant coach overseeing the outfielders as well as assisting with base running and bunting. He also served as the Rockets’ first-base coach, and coordinated UT’s baseball camps.

He went to Toledo in 2009 after two highly successful seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Division III Heidelberg in nearby Tiffin, Ohio. During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the Student Princes posted a combined 78-19 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each season, winning both the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season and tournament titles.

Prior to coaching at Heidelberg, Talarico played four seasons at Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind. He helped guide Manchester to a 124-54 record from 2004-07, while claiming two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships (2004, 2006) and two tournament titles (2004, 2005). Manchester advanced to the NCAA Regional's on three occasions (2004, 2005, 2006) and made an appearance in the Division III World Series in 2004. In his final season, Talarico was named first-team all-conference and third-team All-Mideast Region.

Jim Roberson - Assistant Baseball Coach, University of Dayton

Jim Roberson steps into the role of Flyer pitching coach after serving on the UD staff as the administrative and operations assistant for the past two seasons.

Roberson’s prior coaching stops include two seasons as the pitching coach for Lincoln Memorial University. During that time, the Railsplitters were nationally ranked and reached the postseason for the first time since 1999. He also spent time as an assistant on both the baseball and football teams at Hiram College.

Roberson has also served as the pitching coach for the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League, one of the top wooden bat college leagues in the country. In 2012, Fayetteville made the Coast Plain League Petitt Cup finals and had the best earned run average in the Coastal Plain League.

Roberson graduated from Miamisburg High school and pitched for four years at Defiance College where he received a degree in management and economics. He received his MBA while serving on the staff at Lincoln Memorial University.

Previously, Dennis spent five years as the assistant coach at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.
